How is it different to last years?

The design is very different to last years. Going from a dark design in a hexagon shaped box to this book opening structure, where the colours are brighter, design more intricate and I feel this is more on brand. This has 11 repeated products which I always say is a little disappointing to see but I will say they have included many more full and deluxe sized products this year.

Is it worth the price?

This has shot up in price to £120.00, £35.00 more than last year but the worth has also shot up from £311.05 to £417.00. That means you are getting £297.00 more in contents to what you pay. Is it worth the price, yes, very much so. Do I think it's an advent you should think about first? 100%. I feel paying over £100 on an advent without checking you'd get the full use out of it is wasteful.

How is it different to last years?

The LOOKFANTASTIC advent always sells out so quickly, that I didn't get a chance to review it last year! They've gone for the same chest of draw style structure but chosen this lovely plum colour with red and gold accents. The biggest selling point for me, is that this advent only has one repeated product.

Is it worth the price?

At £85.00 you are receiving over £460.00 worth of products...that's an amazing deal. The brands in the advent are what I call mid to high end, where some are found in the luxury sections of drugstores or you have to order them through the brands own website. I would say this advent is for someone more into skincare, bodycare and makeup, but definitely worth the money.

How is it different to last years?

This is a brand new advent calendar from The Body Shop. This has the same artwork design, same trunk style structure with products in individual boxes but it is surprising to see. The Body Shop has done more than the three advent calendars before, but it was usually one that counted down to New Years. Is this a one off exclusive or the fourth calendar that's here to stay?

Is it worth the price?

This is a whopping £320.00 with a £495.00 worth, a huge £175.00 saving! It includes mostly full sized products but when asking is this worth the money I am in two minds.
I think you get the most amazing variety across bodycare, haircare and skincare but will you use every product? The other side wonders, if this was bought to be seperated and gifted out it's a great saving, but do you have the £320.00 to spend? I also have found it unusual that this advent hasn't had the same style of promotional work done, which leads me to believe this could be an online exclusive product.

How is it different to last years?

With 5 repeated products it has the lowest number of repeats out of all The Body Shop Advent Calendars this year. In a similar fashion, the green represents that it's the ultimate calendar, and it also has the same artwork and trunk style structure. What I noticed is another advent without makeup items, a possible new route for the brand? I also found, this features mini versions of products whilst last years were all full sized.

Is it worth the price?

Price at £140.00 this has a £204.00 worth. I again ask if the increase in price and decrease in worth is because there are no many up products or because it has this reusable packaging? However, I am leaning towards the latter as there are also, fewer full sized products. With a saving of £64.00, you have to ask, with the £140.00 price tag, will you use all the products?

How is it different to last years?

The calendar also has 12 repeated products this year. It's quite surprising to see almost half the contents be repeats. Notably though, there are no makeup items. Last years advent included a couple of lip makeup items but it seems they have kept this as having bodycare, haircare and skincare contents. With the same style of trunk structure and artwork, the design follows through with the same pop up indoor christmas setting feature. Printing in red, this also follows the last few years of reflecting it as the mid-priced calendar.

Is it worth the price?

This has had a price increase of £10.00 to £80.00 compared to last year and in a similar trend to the purple calendar, a decrease in worth, from £136.50 to £119.00. Now you are still getting a tidy little saving of £39.00 on this calendar but it again begs the question, is the decrease in worth because there are no makeup items or because of the fancy packaging?

How is it different to last years?

The Body Shop have carried on for a third year, the same style of art work but they've expanded it in the most beautiful way. I like the mix of showing an indoor christmas scene with an outdoor christmas scene and this is done in the most gorgeous shades of purple. They've also kept the purple colour solely for the smallest of the Advent Calendars which is becoming a staple in distinguishing the different sizes. They have also gone back to the earlier concept of having products in individual products, but instead of a book opening box it's a trunk with a stunning pop up scene.
With no makeup items and less accessories, this still includes 12 repeated products.

Is it worth the price?

Priced at £55.00 it's another year we see a £5.00 increase but the first time we see the worth decrease. It's gone from £79.50 to £77.00 and it makes me question is the £2.50 difference because it hasn't repeated as many accessories or if it's to weigh out the cost of the lavish packaging?
At the end of the day, you are getting your money's worth and getting a lovely saving of £22.00. I like they've kept this a body and hair care only advent. It gives people who are not makeup lovers or young teenagers who may not like to wear or be allowed to wear makeup a better chance at using everything in the calendar. I would say having half the products repeated may not be as appealing to a repeat customer.

*Highlighted products are repeats from last years Advent Calendar*

How is it different to last years?

Still keeping it as a 12 day advent calendar, there are only two new products this year. Benefit have this calendar to reflect their most popular products, which would not only explain the number of repeats but why we see many cult favourite amongst the blogging community. This has a better design to last years, it's on brand but festive. I especially like the fireplace setting.

Is it worth the price?

This is priced the same as last year at £58.50 but the two newer products has bumped up the worth to £132.46...that's £73.96 extra in worth of products!
This advent calendar is, from a monetary perspective, worth the price, however I can see some people being disappointed at the number of repeats. In my opinion, a beauty advent calendar will do one of two things; show off the brands best sellers or show off their newer products. I feel benefit could switch it up and do one solely with some of their newer products.

When I saw this concept last year, counting down 13 days till Halloween I both loved and hated it. I'm big on celebrations but from a consumer point of view I worry this will start another purchased based part of Halloween. I have only found two advent calendars so far that are not homemade. One by Funko and the other by Jazwares. I can understand Funko releasing one to showcase their POP! Horror line and I can also understand Jazwares having the Pokémon one for children, but I question whether they should of been packaged as "Advent Calendars". I'd love to know what you think.
Getting into the reviews...

Funko POP! 13 Day Spooky Countdown Advent Calendar - £29.99

Contents & Description

"Get ready to countdown with Funko's latest calendar: The 13 Day Spooky Countdown Pop! Calendar! If you're not a scaredy cat this is the perfect way to add to your Pop! collection and countdown to Halloween! Beetlejuice, Freddy and Jack are just some over the new mini Pop! Vinyl waiting for you in this brand new Pop! Calendar. Contains 13 figures approx 4cm tall."

Is it worth the price?

A keyring by Funko POP! on average is about £5.00 with the majority of the figures being 4cm tall. Taking into account the keyring element and Funko's blind bag prices. If we calculate an average of £3.50 per figure in this calendar, then for 13, you'll be getting £45.50 worth of content for £29.99. That's a really good saving.
This advent was actually released last year and sold out fast. More retailers have obtained stock but if you purchased it last year you will be getting the same characters in the same designs. For a horror and Funko fan, if you didn't get this last year, then I would recommend it. I like the idea of having the smaller version of themselves alongside the bigger ones.
Just to note; prices will vary amongst retailers but I'd pay no more that the RRP of £29.99.

Jazwares 2021 Pokémon Halloween Countdown Calendar - £44.99

Contents & Description

"Happy Halloween! It’s the spookiest time of the year, and the 2021 Pokémon Halloween Calendar is the perfect way to celebrate! Each calendar comes with ten 2-inch Pokémon figures in an exclusive special finish PLUS three Halloween accessories. Every day is a new surprise! Eevee dressed up just for the occasion, with her witch’s hat featuring a crescent moon! There’s also Zubat, Halloween Squirtle – holding a jack o’lantern of treats, candies, and goodies, Halloween Pikachu, and other adorably fun and not-too-spooky Halloween accessories, like candy apple toys, pumpkin accessories, and even a candy pile accessory! Kids of all ages can enjoy the exciting surprises that Pokémon brings to fans year after year. Create and display your own Pokémon Halloween Scene with the 2021 Pokémon Calendar. Gotta Catch ‘Em All!™"

Is it worth the price?

No. Unfortunately after doing some digging, this is a product made more for the American market. Once it's purchased to be sold over here, with tax and shipping fees the price skyrockets. In the USA it's RRP is $19.99 which is about £14.53. That's a £30.46 markup! They look so cute and I can see this being a sweet alternative for a child who maybe cannot eat chocolate and sweets, but at this price, it just isn't worth it.

The August Review Masterlist

What's To Come Next...

In 2019, I had asked people if they wanted to have the Calendar Countdown as content during the month of November or to be spread across from when the advents start to be released to the end of November. A lot of you said you wanted to know as soon as or even before the release date of the calendar.
Advent Calendars are being released even earlier than previous years and with them selling out fast I will try my best to review as many as I can.
Calendar Countdown is about comparing the advent in design, contents and price to the previous years so you can decide whether the advent will be right for you or for who you are thinking of gifting it to.
I also have a few ideas for Fall and Halloween content but I am trying to keep covid in mind. There is a lot of speculation about restrictions and/or lockdowns so we will see how that plays out. This means there is going to be such a mix of content and I'm excited for it.

I really hope you enjoyed reading The August Review posts this year and will continue to read the content planned over the next couple of months.

NYX Professional Makeup Tinted Brow Mascara

I won't lie, this was an impulse buy. I used to use clear brow mascara in my early teen years, well I used it to glue the little eyebrow I had as flat as possible....early 2000's trends hey? But I wanted something that would be an easy throw on, on lighter makeup days.
The product description says:
"No shame in wishing for a strong beautiful brow! Our foolproof tinted brow mascara helps your dream come true. It sets, tames and tints brows for natural-looking wear. Our dependable formula leaves brows feeling soft while maintaining complete control."

Pros

- Nice light tint.
- Doesn't feel heavy.
- Looks natural.
- Prefect sized brush.
- Affordable.

Cons

- None.

The Verdict

I really like this product. I was worried I'd get early teen vibes again, but it does look so natural. I also like how the brush is shaped, with the thistles close together to pick up every hair. I have found myself using this on its own and as a top up, both times give really gorgeous results and its lasted over 8 hours without a top up.

Benefit Goof Proof Brow Pencil // The August Review

This product was actually a purchase for my mum. She wanted to expand her makeup collection and this was one of the items my dad gifted her. She wasn't too bothered about using an eyebrow pencil and asked if I'd like this. It was a shade lighter than I'd usually buy but after applying, turns out it's actually the shade I should be using.
The product review says:
"Living up to its title, Benefit's Goof Proof Eyebrow Pencil will save any seeker of brilliant brows - first timer or old hand - from catastrophe. The ingeniously angled non-sharpen pencil tip allows you to scribble in sparse areas with easy strokes, while the built-in spoolie brush will blend your handiwork seamlessly. The pencil's super-soft formulation glides on like a dram, filling and shaping with a subtle natural-looking finish."

Pros

- Affordable.
- Love the spoolie brush on the other end.
- Soft texture.
- Able to create thicker and thinner lines with angled shape.

Cons

- None!

The Verdict

I really like the diversity of this product. I am able to create more defined brows but also add light strokes for a softer finish. It also won't budge if you apply a brow gel to finish. I 100% recommend this and I'm actually interested in trying out some of Benefits other brow products once this is used up.

NYX Can't Stop Won't Stop Full Coverage Foundation

When this was released I remember it having such a buzz amongst the beauty community that I had to go out and purchase it. It was another full coverage foundation to add to my growing collection.
The product description says:
"Lightweight, waterproof and pigmented AF, our new Can’t Stop Won’t Stop Full Coverage Foundation hustles as hard as you do. This comfy liquid formula comes in 45 flattering tones that don’t transfer. Every creamy shade glides on smooth, delivering matte coverage and colour that stays true for up to 24 hours. Our little over achiever also works to control shine and mattify your complexion all-day long. But it doesn’t stop there: this foundation is non-comedogenic and suitable for normal, oily, combination, and sensitive skin types."

Pros

- Full coverage.
- Creamy texture.
- This has such an inclusive shade range.
- Long wearing.
- Dries fast.
- Brilliant price.
- Matte finish.

Cons

- Can be drying.

The Verdict

This has a very thick creamy texture that dries fast and at first I did find it difficult to work with when applying with a brush. I would say this foundation is better suited to application with a sponge. I also found it was quite drying when using the MAC Prep + Prime Fix spray, a silicone based primer like the L'Oreal Infallible or e.l.f Putty primers were better suited.
I find there are steps I have to use to prep my skin for this foundation that wouldn't work for everyone and it would take getting used to but, the pay off is amazing. I wouldn't recommend this as a favourite or one that you have to get your hands on but I would recommend this for those getting into the makeup world as its a different formulation to learn about.

As always, thanks for reading...

MAC Studio Fix Soft Matte Foundation Stick

I had received a voucher for MAC for Christmas and I genuinely wasn't looking to buy a foundation but when I saw this, I thought, having got on so well with the stick foundation by makeup revolution maybe this would give me that little extra coverage. I usually find MAC one of my go to's for nights out or celebrations, so I am surprised to say this is a good go to for day to day use.
The product description says:
"Create an immaculate and enviable visage with MAC Studio Fix Soft Matte Foundation Stick. The Initially creamy formula won't congeal of gather on the skin, making cakey complexions a thing of the past. Available in 33 different shades, the stick-based applicator ensures easy administration as it glides effortlessly onto the face. The foundation offers medium coverage but is both buildable and blendable, creating a soft matte finish for natural-looking, flawless results. Lightweight and durable, MAC provides maximum staying power with 24-hour wear."

Pros

- Glides onto the skin.
- Soft matte finish.
- Medium coverage but can build to a fuller coverage.
- Blendable.
- Doesn't cake.
- Doesn't leave streaks when applying with a brush.
- Great handbag size for travel and top ups.
- Lightweight feel.

Cons

- Shade range needs expanding for darker tones.

The Verdict

I really like this foundation, I actually prefer it to the MAC fluid fix liquid one. With having a stick foundation, I feel I have more control when building a fuller coverage. It's lightweight and honestly, you forget you have foundation on.
The only downside for me is the shade range. There is a good range in the lighter to medium shades (which is a benefit for me) but barley anything for darker skin. MAC does have better shade options in other formulations but it confuses me as to why they have a 60+ shade portfolio and only produce 33 in this product. I'm coming to realise after speaking to other makeup lovers online that foundation products that are reviewed as "staple products" or "cult favourites" are not always as inclusive as they advertise.

Huda Beauty #FauxFilter Luminous Matte Full Coverage Liquid Foundation

This is one of those cult favourite products that I've always wanted to try. When it was on offer at Boots I decided to go for it as my usual foundation was out of stock.
The product description says:
"Your favorite filter in a bottle is back, and it’s better than ever! With the same full coverage and long-lasting properties, you know and love from the OG formula, but with 24-hour flexible wear, a luminous matte finish AND… it’s fragrance-free!
The true filter effect gives instant coverage so seamless that it immediately unifies skin tone and texture as it blurs skin to give a radiant finish. The non-cakey formula is life proof (waterproof, super long wear (24hr), transfer proof, fade proof, sweat proof, humidity proof), so essentially this foundation is your new BFF. No matter what the weather, occasion or situation, #FauxFilter Luminous Matte will NEVER let you down."

Pros

- 100% full coverage.
- Doesn't cake.
- Matte payoff.
- Easy to apply with a brush or sponge.
- Amazing shade range.
- Doesn't budge.
- Doesn't transfer
- Only need two pumps.
- Fragrance free.

Cons

- Can feel a little heavy for day to day use.

The Verdict

I've paired this with both the e.l.f. poreless putty primer and mac's prep and prime spray, each time I found I had such a lovely, full coverage base but I know I'm wearing foundation. For day to day use, it's a little much for me, going out for a meal or to dress up with it's perfect and I feel it'll be something I repurchase again once the covid situation gets better.

Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer

This is the first time I've re-reviewed a product. The collection lasting perfection concealer has had a glow up over the years and is now a 16 hour wear concealer with more shades and new applicator.
The product description says:
"The ultimate 16 hour wear concealer is now available in new perfect skin-matching shades.
The vegan formula is buildable, blendable and effortlessly covers and conceals blemishes and dark circles for a flawlessly smooth base. The lightweight liquid concealer glides onto the skin easily with a doe foot applicator. Pair with one of Collection’s Lasting Perfection Foundation shades, now formulated to perfectly match each concealer shade, making it easier to shop your base than ever before."

Pros

- Love the new shade range.
- A smooth consistency.
- Blends into the skin with no streaks, whether with a brush or sponge.
- Affordable.
- Build-able coverage.
- Can use as a concealer or contour.

Cons

- Not a huge fan of the doe applicator.

The Verdict

I haven't tested the full 16 hours as I haven't been in a situation to do so, but I am still very impressed with this concealer. It's what I like to call "cheap and cheerful". It does what it says and covers blemishes and dark circles, all whilst being buildable yet doesn't break the bank. The only downside for me is the doe applicator, it's just something I'm not a huge fan of but then again I make sure not to share this with other people or use when having breakouts. This is perfect whether a beginner or lover of makeup.

e.l.f. Poreless Putty Primer

I have been after this product for a while. Pre-lockdown it was so hard to get hold of and well, during lockdown I didn't see much use to wear makeup. e.l.f. is a brand I've used and loved before but since I started blogging back in 2013, it's become a lot more accessible through retailers such as Superdrug and Boots.
The product description says:
"This skin perfecting poreless putty primer is infused with Squalane to help grip makeup for all-day wear and help protect skin from moisture loss. The velvety texture glides effortlessly over the skin, smoothing over imperfections for a poreless effect."

Pros

- Affordable.
- A little goes a long way.
- Glides onto the skin with a non greasy texture.
- Sheer coverage.
- Creates a smooth base.
- Minimises pores.

Cons

- None.

The Verdict

I had previously been a fan of the mineral infused primer by e.l.f. but this has by far surpassed it. I love that it comes in a pot as its easier for application without wasting a drop. You are never going to get a flawless foundation base. I think a lot of people forget that skin has texture, but this is the closest I've come to being able to have that "airbrushed" look. It's worked so well with a range of foundations and I like that I can apply it with my fingers or a brush and get the same result. I highly recommend this.

fur Ingrown Concentrate

With waxing, shaving, sugaring....whatever form of hair removal you may do, ingrown hairs can be an absolute bother. I have started to have issues with them under my arms and on my legs so thought to give this a go after seeing bloggers rave about it for their bikini lines.
The product description says:
"Gently banish bumps and redness. Together this all-natural oil and textured finger mitt soothe irritation and eradicate ingrowns, resulting in clear, smooth pores for even the most sensitive skin."

Pros

- No ingrowns!
- No redness.
- No bumpy skin.
- Handy little mitt to exfoliate the area.
- Softens the skin.
- Only two to three drops needed.

Cons

- None.

The Verdict

I didn't think an oil could do so much! I have already repurchased this and have recommended it to a lot of my friends. Especially to those who wax under the arms. It softens the area meaning no ingrowns and the bonus of soft under arms! I know that the price may be off putting at first but I would invest. I cant recommend this highly enough.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Body Gel Cream

After getting on so well with the hydro boost moisturiser I decided to switch out from my usual heavier body butters for this for the summer. I made it a mission to use up all the body butters I had left so I could just continue using this.
The product description says:
"Neutrogena Hydro Boost® Body Gel Cream brings advanced facial hydration expertise to body care, for clinically proven supple and radiant skin. This refreshing and ultra-light formula is powered by Hyaluronic Acid, skincare’s super hydrator capable of holding up to 1000x its weight in water. It gives skin the boost of hydration it needs by; helping to lock in skin-quenching hydration and maintaining skin’s moisture balance by continuously releasing hydration as and when it needs it. 90% of women agree skin is noticeably more supple and 79% of women agree skin looks and feels more beautiful.
Absorbs instantly with a non-greasy feeling so you can get dressed immediately. Suitable for sensitive skin. Tested under dermatological control."

Pros

- Affordable.
- Handy pump bottle packaging.
- Light non greasy texture.
- A little goes a long way.
- Absorbs fast with no sticky feeling.
- Hydrates the skin.
- No breakouts or irritation.
- Leaves skin feeling soft.

Cons

- None!

The Verdict

I cannot get enough of this product. I find that most body lotions, butters or moisturisers take time to absorb into the skin and it adds time to the normal day to day routine that sometimes you just don't have. This is fast acting, hydrating and so so affordable. The hyaluronic acid in this has helped hydrate around the breakouts on my skin too. It's made daily moisturising easier.
